After completing a BSc with honours in Zoology, James received his BDS with distinction in restorative dentistry in 2005.

He completed his General Professional Training and, soon after, was successful in becoming a member of the dental faculty of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh (during which he won the FDGP Case Study Award).

He was appointed as a lecturer in restorative dentistry in 2012 and is currently working towards completion of specialist training. His research interests include decision-making within primary care (for which he won the BSSPD research award in 2007 and the Schottlander oral presentation prize in 2008), teaching and assessment methods, and the nanoscale measurement of dental hard tissues.

James recently won funding from the Oral and Dental Research trust in order to study the effect of fruit smoothies on tooth surface loss. He currently provides a significant amount of removable prosthetics teaching on the course, as well as providing a number of postgraduate courses for the local deanery and PCTs on the same subject.

Recently James became the course leader for Key Clinical Skills and director of the Prosthodontics component of the MClinDent. He sits on the BDS board of studies, BDS admissions panel, and several stage standard-setting committees.
