About the Society

The British Society of Prosthodontics (BSSPD) is one of the oldest of the specialist dental societies in the UK and was founded in 1953. The worldwide membership is approaching 400, and the society is always actively pursuing new members who have an interest in fixed, removable, implant or maxillofacial prosthodontics.

Membership

Membership is open to dentists, doctors, scientists and other dental care professionals who profess an interest in prosthodontics. The membership benefits include reduced rates for conference attendance, free subscription to the European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry and opportunities to present and apply for numerous research prizes and bursaries that this friendly society affords. The large number of members in practice has ensured that the Society has remained in touch with general practice as well as academic dentistry. Honorary membership is offered to distinguished individuals by unanimous election of the Society.

Annual Conference

Our annual conference is held the week before Easter and aims to address topical issues of interest to the dental profession, both dentists and dental care professionals. The major part of the Conference consists of a scientific programme during which papers, posters and table demonstrations are presented. Active discussion of the presentations has always been a feature of this Conference.

Representation

The Society is represented on National Dental Committees, including the Specialist Advisory Committee in Restorative Dentistry, the Association of Consultants and Specialists in Restorative Dentistry Group and the British Standards Institution. The Society also contributes to Committees for Continuing Professional Education and Clinical Effectiveness, Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Publications

The Annual Proceedings of the Society contain the Conference programme and abstracts for papers and posters, as well as a list of members' publications. The Society's officers, council members, honorary members and past presidents are recorded. A list of previous winners of the Society's awards and prizes are also included in the Proceedings. Quintessence UK distribute the Proceedings world-wide through their offices in London, Chicago, Tokyo and Berlin. All members of the Society receive a copy of the Proceedings free of further charge.

The Society has published Guidelines concerning the quality of design and construction of complete and partial dentures and of implant based prostheses (Ed. Ogden, A. Quintessence, London 1996).
