'Cosmetic Zone' Treatment - Challenges and Practical Solutions

Learning aims and objectives: Dean has kindly agreed to present a bsspd webinar on the provision of implant treatment within the anterior cosmetic zone with practical clinical solutions to common problems. Dean will tackle the dilemma of immediate or delayed implant placement within the cosmetic zone and the assessment of gingival soft-tissue and lip form. He will discuss his approach to soft and hard tissue grafting in the cosmetic zone. Treatment planning of placing implants next to heavily restored natural teeth can be difficult - Dean will offer some and advice for the delegates on this dilemma. He will also outline his approach to deciding whether fixed or removable implant supported prostheses are most appropriate and the role of pink acrylic and ceramic.

Dean is a Consultant and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Aberdeen Dental School & Hospital. His clinical practice incorporates all aspects of Restorative Dentistry and particularly the management of patients requiring complex and advanced restorative treatment need, including multi-disciplinary care. Dean qualified in Newcastle in 1996 and after training in general practice and various junior hospital jobs, he moved from his native north-east England to Aberdeen for a six month period. He then returned to Tyneside to undertake his Higher Specialist Training in Restorative Dentistry before retracing the path north to the Granite City to take up his consultant appointment in 2006. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and received his doctorate from Newcastle University in 2008.
His interest in training GDPs and future specialists has seen him lecture widely on various topics throughout the UK and abroad. He is currently the Chair of the Scottish Specialty Training Committee in Restorative Dentistry, an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry, and he sits on several national bodies. He maintains a private practice, largely devoted to implant dentistry.
