The role of implants in the management of hypodontia patients

Dr. Craig William Barclay qualified BDS in 1986 in Glasgow. After taking up a variety of posts in various organizations, he is now Consultant in Oral Rehabilitation and Senior Lecturer at University Dental Hospital of Manchester/Christie Hospital and is on the specialist lists of both Restorative Dentistry and Fixed and Removable Prosthetics. His area of clinical research interest is in the use of osseo-integrated implants in prosthetic rehabilitation, treatment planning and rehabilitation of head and neck oncology patients and improvement in quality of life of this group of patients. He was awarded the European Research Award in 1993 and British Research Award in1995. He developed a Head and Neck Cancer Touch screen Database for which he was awarded an NHS North West Innovation Award in 2009. He is active in teaching for both undergraduate and post graduate students and also junior staff training and specialist registrar training programmes in Restorative Dentistry. He is chair of the ISFE exam, an MRD Examiner as well as sitting on the Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

He is credited with over 30 refereed papers published in various national and international journals and has also written three text books. He has lectured nationally and internationally and is a keynote speaker for various organisations. He was the Past President of the British Society of Prosthodontics and Founder of the British Oral Rehabilitation Research Network (BORRN). He is currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean for Specialist Training, Board member of the Trust Cancer Board, Board member of Greater Manchester and Cheshire Head and Neck Cancer Network, and Director of Education at MANDEC, Director of Red Square and Partner in the Square Advanced Dental Care Centre. He is currently principal investigator in a NIHR Patient benefit grant in a randomised clinical trial comparing mini and conventional dental implants.

Aims

  • Define hypodontia and describe its demography, presentation and genetic basis.
  • Review the role of orthodontics and restorative dentistry in endosseous implant rehabilitation of patients with hypodontia.

Objectives

  • To be able to identify the principles of restorative and orthodontic management and illustrate their integration, to optimise treatment outcome.
  • To understand the role of implants in the management of hypodontia.
  • To be able to outline restorative and surgical interventions, relevant to the management of hypodontia.
  • To be able to appraise an interdisciplinary approach to the management of hypodontia.
