Annual Conference 2004

The 2004 Conference was held at Latimer House in Buckinghamshire under the Presidency of Dr Michael Barsby. The conference ran from 4th-6th April 2004.

Following an inspirational opening of the conference by Professor Brenda Gourley, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University, the meeting got off to a stimulating start with a half day symposium on the 'Management of Hypodontia'. Speakers for the symposium included Dr Birgitta Bergendal (Sweden) who explained the range of ectodermal dysplasia syndromes, Professor John Hobkirk (Eastman) who discussed experiences with 'Multidisciplinary management', Dr Ross Hobson (Newcastle) on the 'Role of Orthodontics' and including tooth transplants and Mr Paul King (Bristol) who brought together all the 'Restorative aspects of management'.

The subsequent two days of the conference included papers entered for the Society's prestigious Schottlander Prize, won this year by Mr Andrew Juszcyk for his presentation on 'Deformation of Phosphate-bonded Investment Materials at Elevated Temperatures'. Other papers presented included a broad spectrum of topics ranging from the 'Effectiveness of Oral Appliances in the Management of Snoring and Sleep Apnoea' to the 'Impact of Conventional and Implant Supported Prostheses on the Social and Sexual Activities of Edentulous Adults'.
As usual there were also poster presentations of a very high standard and an extensive trade display.

Accommodation and facilities at Latimer were of a particularly high standard and members of the Society and guests enjoyed an excellent Conference Dinner on the Monday evening. Undoubtedly the relaxed rural setting, comfortable accommodation, leisure facilities and good food did much to foster the friendliness and professional interchanges for which BSSPD conferences are renowned.
